How can we help?
We’re here to help you get the most out of Nekopedia. Browse the answers below, or reach out directly if you can’t find what you need.
Getting Started
How does breed identification work?
Nekopedia uses on-device intelligence to analyze your photo and identify the cat breed. All processing happens locally on your device, so your photos are never uploaded anywhere.
Do I need an internet connection?
Breed identification and favorites work entirely offline, no internet required. However, breed details, the quiz, and cat trivia fetch content from the internet and do require a connection.
Is Nekopedia free?
Yes, completely free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no ads.
How many breeds can Nekopedia identify?
Nekopedia recognizes 48 cat breeds, including popular ones like Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Siamese, Persian, Bengal, British Shorthair, and many more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why wasn’t my cat’s breed recognized correctly?
The model works best with clear, well-lit photos where the cat is the main subject. Try taking the photo from a different angle or in better lighting. Natural light is ideal, and front-facing or profile shots tend to work well. Mixed-breed cats may show the closest matching purebred. You can also check the “Other possibilities” section below the main result for alternative matches.
Where is my data stored?
All scan history and favorites are stored locally on your device only. Nothing is sent to external servers.
How do I save and view favorites?
After scanning a cat, tap the heart icon on the result card to save it. Your saved scans appear in the Favorites tab as a gallery. Tap any saved scan to revisit the breed details.
How do I delete saved favorites?
To remove all app data, delete Nekopedia from your device. All locally stored data is removed automatically when the app is uninstalled.
What happens if I delete the app?
Uninstalling Nekopedia permanently removes all saved favorites and scan history from your device. Since there is no cloud backup or sync, this cannot be undone.
How do I use the Explore tab?
The Explore tab lets you search all 48 breeds by name, or browse an interactive world map showing where each breed originated. Tap a country pin on the map to see all breeds from that country, then tap any breed to view its full details.
How do the Quiz and Trivia games work?
Both games require an internet connection. The Breed Quiz shows you a cat photo and asks you to pick the correct breed from four choices, with 10 questions per round. Cat Trivia presents true-or-false statements about cats, also 10 questions per round. Both games award a reward title based on your score.
Does Nekopedia work on iPad?
Yes. Nekopedia is a universal app that works on both iPhone and iPad.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your photos never leave your device and no personal data is collected. See our full Privacy Policy for details.
Permissions
Why does Nekopedia need camera access?
Camera access lets you take photos of cats directly in the app for breed identification. You can skip this permission and choose photos from your library instead.
Why does Nekopedia need photo library access?
Photo library access lets you select existing photos from your library for breed identification. This is an alternative to using the camera.
Does Nekopedia access my location or other data?
No. Nekopedia only requests camera and photo library access. It does not access your location, contacts, microphone, or any other sensitive information.
Troubleshooting
The camera isn’t working
Open Settings, then navigate to Nekopedia and make sure Camera access is toggled on. If it’s already enabled, try force-closing and reopening the app.
Breed info, quiz, or trivia content isn’t loading
These features require an active internet connection. Confirm you’re connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, then try again. If the issue persists, the service may be temporarily unavailable. Wait a few minutes and retry.
The app says “Not a Cat”
Nekopedia first checks whether the photo contains a cat before attempting breed identification. If the image is too blurry, poorly lit, or the cat is too small in the frame, it may not detect a cat. Try a clearer photo with the cat as the main subject.
The app is crashing or freezing
Make sure you’re running the latest version from the App Store, then restart your device and try again. If the issue persists, please contact us below.
Compatibility
Nekopedia requires iOS 16.0 or later and runs on both iPhone and iPad.
