How can we help?

We want you to have a great experience with Barkpedia. If something isn’t working as expected, you’ll likely find the answer below. If not, we’re just an email away.

Getting Started

How does breed identification work?

Barkpedia uses advanced on-device intelligence to analyze your photo and identify the dog breed. All processing happens locally on your iPhone or iPad — your photos are never uploaded anywhere.

Do I need an internet connection?

Not for the core experience. Breed identification, saved favorites, breed search, and the world map all work entirely offline. Breed detail pages (temperament, history, photos), the Quiz, and Dog Trivia do require an internet connection to load content.

Is Barkpedia really free?

Yes — completely free with no catches. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no ads.

How many breeds can Barkpedia recognize?

Barkpedia identifies 147 breeds based on AKC standards.

Using the App

What is the Explore tab?

Explore gives you two ways to discover breeds:

Both search and the map work offline.

How do the Quiz and Trivia games work?

Both games require an internet connection.

Does Barkpedia work on iPad?

Yes. Barkpedia automatically adapts its layout — tab navigation on iPhone and sidebar navigation on iPad. All five sections (Scan, Favorites, Explore, Quiz, and Trivia) are fully optimized for both devices.

Privacy and Data

Is my data private?

Yes. Your photos are processed entirely on your device and never uploaded. Barkpedia collects no personal data, has no user accounts, and includes no analytics or tracking. See our full Privacy Policy for details.

Where is my data stored?

Scan history and favorites are stored locally on your device only. Nothing is sent to external servers.

How do I delete my data?

Swipe left on any item in the Favorites tab to remove it. To delete all app data at once, simply delete Barkpedia from your device.

What happens if I delete the app?

Uninstalling Barkpedia permanently removes all saved favorites and scan history from your device. Since there is no cloud backup or sync, this cannot be undone.

Permissions

Why does Barkpedia need camera access?

Camera access lets you photograph dogs directly in the app for breed identification. This permission is optional — you can use your photo library instead.

Why does Barkpedia need photo library access?

Photo library access lets you select existing photos for identification. This is an alternative to using the camera.

Does Barkpedia access my location or other data?

No. Barkpedia only requests camera and photo library access. It does not use location services, contacts, microphone, notifications, or any other sensitive permissions.

Troubleshooting

The camera isn’t working

Go to Settings → Barkpedia and confirm Camera access is enabled. If it’s already on, try force-closing and reopening the app.

Breed info, quiz, or trivia content isn’t loading

These features require an active internet connection. Check your Wi-Fi or cellular connection and try again. If the problem continues, the content service may be temporarily unavailable — wait a few minutes and retry.

The app says “Not a Dog”

Barkpedia verifies a dog is present in the photo before identifying the breed. If the image is too blurry, poorly lit, or the dog is too small in the frame, it may not detect one. Try a clearer photo with the dog as the main subject.

The app is crashing or freezing

Make sure you’re running the latest version from the App Store, then restart your device and try again. If the issue persists, please contact us below.

Compatibility

Barkpedia requires iOS 17.0 or later and runs on both iPhone and iPad.
