Getting Started
How do the daily recommendations work?
Each day, ETFWise selects top ETFs across seven categories (Major Index, Sector, Bond & Fixed Income, International, Commodity, Thematic, and Dividend) based on live market data. The list is pinned for the full day so your view stays stable — only prices and sentiment refresh automatically every 5 minutes. Tap “See More” on any section to explore subcategories.
Do I need an API key?
A free Finnhub API key unlocks live prices, news, and analyst data. You can get one at finnhub.io and enter it on first launch. If you skip this step, the app runs with built-in demo data so you can explore the full interface.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes, for live prices, news, sentiment, and fund data. However, the on-device AI model runs entirely offline once downloaded — no internet needed for AI-generated analysis.
How much does ETFWise cost?
ETFWise is free to download from the App Store. There are no subscriptions and no ads.

What is the on-device AI?
ETFWise includes a lightweight language model that runs locally on your device. It generates bull cases and risk cases using the real data shown on screen — price, returns, sentiment, and news. All processing happens on your device. Nothing is sent to external servers.
How do I download the AI model?
If the model isn’t pre-installed, you’ll see a “Download Model” card on the main screen and in ETF detail views. Tap it to download (~290 MB). A progress bar shows the download status. Once complete, the model is saved locally for future use.
How does news sentiment work?
The app analyzes recent news articles (7-day window) for each ETF and scores them for positive or negative tone. The result is displayed as Bearish, Negative, Neutral, Positive, or Bullish. Up to 3 recent headlines are shown alongside the score.
Can I search for a specific ETF?
Yes. Use the search bar to find any ETF by ticker symbol or name. The search covers 200+ curated ETFs plus an extended library of over 400 tickers in total.
Is my data private?
Yes. No accounts, no analytics, no tracking. Only ticker symbols are sent to financial data providers. See our full Privacy Policy for details.
Troubleshooting
Prices aren’t loading
- Make sure you’ve entered a valid Finnhub API key (get a free one at finnhub.io)
- Check that your device is connected to the internet
- If you skipped the API key step, the app shows demo data instead of live prices — this is expected behavior
“Unable to load ETF data” error
This usually means a network request failed. Check your internet connection and tap “Retry.” If you’re using a Finnhub API key, verify it’s entered correctly in the app settings.
Bull and risk cases aren’t generating
The on-device AI model must be downloaded first. Look for the “Download Model” card on the main screen or in the ETF detail view and tap to download.
Fund data (holdings, performance) isn’t loading
Holdings and performance data require an internet connection. If data fails to load, try closing and reopening the ETF detail view.
The app is crashing or freezing
- Make sure you’re running the latest version from the App Store
- Force-close the app and reopen it
- Restart your device
