Frequently Asked Questions
Is Solcast free?
Yes — completely free with no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no ads.
Do I need an internet connection?
An internet connection is needed to fetch weather data. Once loaded, cached forecasts are available offline. All recommendations and indices are computed on your device regardless of connectivity.
What data does Solcast collect?
None. There are no user accounts, no analytics, and no tracking. All preferences stay on your device. See our full Privacy Policy for details.
Permissions
Why does Solcast need my location?
Solcast requests Location (When In Use) to fetch accurate weather, air quality, and pollen data for your area. Your coordinates are sent only to weather services (Apple Weather and Open-Meteo) and are never stored on any server. You can also add locations manually without granting location access.
Does Solcast access my camera, contacts, or other data?
No. Solcast only requests location permission. It does not access your camera, contacts, microphone, photos, health data, or any other sensitive information.
Troubleshooting
Weather data isn’t loading
- Check that your device is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Pull down on the dashboard to refresh.
- If the problem persists, the weather service may be temporarily unavailable — try again in a few minutes.
Location isn’t being detected
- Make sure you’ve granted Solcast location access in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Solcast.
- Try restarting the app or toggling location permission off and on.
The app is crashing
- Make sure you’re running the latest version of Solcast from the App Store.
- Try restarting your device.
- If crashes persist, please contact us with your device model and iOS version.
An index or recommendation seems inaccurate
Solcast computes recommendations using real-time weather data combined with your personal settings. If something seems off:
- Double-check your sensitivity settings (Settings > About You).
- Verify the correct location is selected.
- Note that air quality and pollen data availability may vary by region — the app hides indices when data is unavailable for your area.
External Services
Solcast uses the following services to deliver weather data:
| Service | Role |
|---|---|
| Apple Weather | Primary weather source: temperature, wind, UV, precipitation, sunrise/sunset |
| Open-Meteo | Fallback weather, plus air quality (AQI, PM2.5, PM10) and pollen forecasts |
| Apple Maps | Location search and city name display |
All recommendation logic runs entirely on your device — no external AI or cloud processing involved.
Compatibility
